영어는 영어로 학습해야 합니다
우리가 학습해야 할 외국어의 선택은 우리의 현실적 필요성에 의해서 결정됩니다. 따라서 세계 각국들과의 치열한 경쟁에서 살아남기 위한 수단으로써 우리는 영어를 배워야 하고, 영어교육의 주안점은 ‘의사소통 능력의 함양’에 맞추어져야 합니다.
그래서 지난 1990년대 중반 이후 우리나라의 각 대학들은 대학교육 개혁의 일환으로 대학영어교육의 개혁을 외쳐왔습니다. 기존의 영어교육이 지나치게 문법 위주의 교수와 평가로 치우친 결과 영어 벙어리를 강요해 왔고, 대학영어교육 역시 영어 원문, 그것도 주로 문학작품 위주의 영문들을 해석하는 수준에 그쳤기 때문입니다.
이에 우리대학은 "영어는 영어로 학습해야 한다"는 기본원칙 아래 모든 수업을 영어로 진행함으로써 학생들이 영어에 노출되는 기회를 극대화하는 것에 역점을 두고 있습니다. 즉, 영어를 학습의 매체로 사용함으로써 학생들이 영어의 바다에 완전히 빠질 수 있는 학습의 장을 조성해 주는 데 힘을 쏟는 것입니다. 그 결과, 학생들의 언어입력은 극대화될 수 있고, 학습의 초점은 언어 형태가 아닌 교과목 내용에 맞추어짐으로써 교과목 학습을 하는 과정에서 무의식적으로 영어의 4가지 기능(듣기, 말하기, 쓰기, 읽기)의 학습이 가능하게 됩니다.
서울여자대학교 교양영어 프로그램에서는 이와 같은 점을 고려하여 모든 수업 시간에 영어만을 사용하는 한편, 분반별 수강인원을 최대 30명으로 제한하고, SWU 영어영예등급제도에 따라 교과과정의 로드맵을 제공하는 등 효율의 극대화를 위해 끊임없이 노력하고 있습니다.

ENGLISH should be learned in ENGLISH
The study of a foreign language is determined by our actual needs. English, which has evolved into the most widely used language throughout the globe, has deeply permeated our lives via the Internet and the media regardless of our intention for it to be so. Thus, we need to learn English as a means of surviving competition with other countries. English for the sake of survival and as a medium of communication, that is sufficient reason for us to spend much time and effort learning it.
From the mid 1990s all Korean universities called for a change in English education as part of university reform. It can be argued that such calls stemmed from being concerned about ineffective English education and came to the following realization: the existing English education system was inclined heavily toward grammar instruction and evaluation, thus, resulting in deficiencies in understanding and speaking English. In the name of general English education, university English education was also heavily focused on and limited to interpreting the original English texts, mostly literary works.
Unlike other subjects of study, apart from a small number of those who take up English as a major area of study, English exists as a means-to-an-end subject. In other words, for us, English transcends its existing status as just a foreign language and becomes a vital means of surviving intense competition with other countries, i.e., a preferred means of communication for citizens of the world. Consequently, the main emphasis of English education must naturally be in sync with cultivation of the ability to communicate in a globalized world.
By instructing and learning all subjects in English under the principle of 'English should be learned in English,' SWU general English education emphasizes and maximizes students' opportunities for English exposure. In other words, much effort is given to provide an opportunity for students to be completely immersed in a 'sea of English' by using English as a medium of learning. As a result, the students' language input can be maximized and, by not putting the emphasis on the form of the language but matching the learning content with it, it should be possible for the students to subconsciously learn the four basics of English (i.e., listening, speaking, reading, and writing).
In addition to the General English Program using English only during class, for these considerations, each class is limited to 30 students. In addition, a continuous effort has been made to maximize learning efficiency by structuring courses into 5 levels such as English I, English II, English III, English IV and English Presentation.
